This proves that in order to gain success a price must be paid (Wilde,60). She blackmails Robert Chiltern for success and money, but she fails to get what she wants. Cheveley is a nonconformist she does not follow rules and is willing do anything to get what she wants. Her actions cause her to realize that no one can be thought of as perfect (Wilde,69). Cheveley finds a letter she wrote and assumes it is adulterous. She has never been known to commit any atrocious acts, unlike her husband. His wife Lady Chiltern is the ideal wife who never does anything wrong. His indecent actions show the theme that no one is perfect. Although Robert Chiltern is riddled with imperfections despite what anyone thinks. This is shown when Lord Goring’s Father tells him to get married and be more like Robert Chiltern. Oscar Wilde, the author of An Ideal Husband, marks Sir Robert Chiltern as the ideal husband in the story. In conclusion, she retracts being blackmailed and this saves the Chiltern family ending the story and turning the at first serious tone into a peaceful one (Wilde78). Lord Goring finds the stolen brooch and to inform the authorities of Cheveley’s theft. Sir Chiltern and Lady Chiltern argue about his mistake he then wife loses love for him (Wilde,43). Cheveley fails to get him to change his mind and she doesn’t find her brooch. She and Lady Chiltern argue and his wife finds out what he did.
After receiving the letter she returns to the Chiltern house looking for her brooch. He writes Lady Cheveley of his final decision. His wife convinces him to keep his ideas once more. The tone becomes serious and Sir Robert Chiltern is left in turmoil. Although Lady Cheveley informing him off what could happen convinced him to go along with the scheme. Sir Robert knowing that if evidence of his swindle got out it would ruin his life he still refused. After it is made apparent that she has no other choice she reveals a letter from his past containing evidence of his misdeeds. Lady Cheveley asked him to not present his intended report to the commissioners declaring she will pay him for his deed The conflict is caused when Sir Robert refuses saying he’s a man of honor who wouldn’t do such a thing. Lady Cheveley came to the party to speak with Sir Robert needing a favor from him. First, the main characters are Sir Robert Chiltern and Lady Cheveley. It began In a room with elegant lighting and extravagant decor. This story takes place inside Sir Robert Chiltern’s manor. The book An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde begins in London taking place over a period of one day. Morality and marriage are used to further the theme of the story (Wilde 21). This book reads “circumstance should never alter principles Wilde, Oscar 21”.The themes are forgotten morals and the sacredness of marriage.
